A senior officer from the Ahmedabad Crime Branch was injured, and a history-sheeter was shot in the leg after a suspect attacked the police with a kitchen knife during questioning. The incident occurred following the recovery of illegal firearms in the Chandola area of the city.
Acting on specific intelligence, Crime Branch officers raided a hut near Chandola Lake where illegal weapons were concealed by a suspect named Mohammad Kalim. Four firearms and cartridges were recovered from the location, and the accused was questioned after completing electronic evidence formalities.
During the questioning, the accused suddenly attacked Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sharad Singhal with a kitchen knife. Singhal, in self-defense, sustained a cut on his hand and fired a shot at the suspect’s leg to subdue him. Both the injured officer and the accused were taken to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for treatment.
Singhal clarified that the suspect seemed to be under the influence of drugs and disregarded warnings to drop the weapon. He emphasized that the incident should not be sensationalized as a deliberate attack on a senior police officer and highlighted the need for reviewing operational procedures to ensure safety during interrogations.
