At least seven people lost their lives, and 33 others sustained injuries in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province within the last 24 hours due to strong winds, lightning, and rainfall. The fatalities occurred in incidents where houses collapsed because of the severe weather conditions in various parts of the province. This unfortunate event follows a previous incident earlier this month that resulted in two deaths and 31 injuries in the same region.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecasted more rainfall in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and parts of Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir. Meanwhile, the rest of the country is expected to experience hot and dry weather conditions. Despite advance warnings by the National Disaster Management Authority regarding the recent storms, the preparedness and response mechanisms in the affected areas have once again been exposed as inadequate.
The recurring disruptions caused by seasonal storms in Pakistan highlight the challenge of translating weather information into effective action. Although warnings are issued and risks are well understood, the gap between preparedness and response persists. The country continues to face weather-related challenges, with the need for improved coordination and timely actions to mitigate risks.
