A sudden severe weather spell struck Delhi and nearby areas of the National Capital Region (NCR) on Tuesday afternoon, causing dust storms and strong winds. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red alert, anticipating the severe weather to last for about 3 hours. Wind speeds could reach up to 100 kmph in isolated locations, with thunderstorms, lightning, and light rainfall expected across the region.
The weather shift began around 2.30 p.m., with the IMD issuing urgent advisories for Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The strong winds led to reduced visibility as dust clouds covered roads and residential areas. This sudden change brought relief from the recent intense heat, attributed to above-normal temperatures creating favorable conditions for the storm.
Meteorologists predict that the dust storm will be followed by thunderstorms, lightning, and light rainfall, aiding in settling dust particles and cooling the region. The alert extends to districts in neighboring states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, with warnings for specific areas prone to the severe weather conditions.
The IMD forecasts gusty winds, thunderstorms, lightning, and light rain with speeds ranging from 50 to 80 kmph for Delhi and surrounding NCR regions. While moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Delhi-NCR, conditions are anticipated to gradually improve, leading to dry weather by the evening.
