The National Day celebrations of Seychelles commenced with parades, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending as the Guest of Honour during his State visit to the archipelagic island. A contingent of the Indian defence forces, Assam Rifles, and the Indian Navy marching band, along with two Indian Navy ships, also participated in the celebrations on Sunday. PM Modi, who arrived in Seychelles on Saturday at the invitation of President Patrick Herminie, witnessed Seychelles’ soldiers parachuting into the venue with their national flags, marking the 50th anniversary of the nation’s independence.
PM Modi was visibly appreciative, clapping at the performances and standing as Indian soldiers took part in the march. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, were also in attendance at the event. India and Seychelles share a longstanding partnership based on shared historical, cultural, and people-to-people ties, as highlighted by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Seychelles holds a significant place in India’s Vision ‘MAHASAGAR’ and the commitment to the Global South as a key maritime neighbor in the Indian Ocean region. The MEA stated that the visit aims to strengthen the enduring friendship between India and Seychelles and enhance bilateral relations across various sectors. PM Modi was honored with the ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’, Seychelles’ highest recognition for leadership in environmental conservation and sustainable development, underscoring his dedication to sustainable growth and environmental protection.
