Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed his support for the government’s initiative in forming the ‘High-Level Committee on Demographic Change’ to address challenges like infiltration leading to unnatural demographic shifts in India. Tharoor emphasized the importance of having accurate data on demographic factors before drawing any conclusions about the issue.
The announcement of the committee was made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a book launch event in New Delhi. Tharoor highlighted the significance of understanding the numbers involved in demographic changes to prevent misuse of incomplete data for political purposes. He stressed the need for precise and comprehensive facts and figures to grasp the true demographic trends in the country.
The committee, chaired by Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar (Retd), will include members such as the Census Commissioner, Durga Shankar Mishra (Retd IAS), Balaji Srivastava (Retd IPS), and Dr. Shamika Ravi. The committee’s mandate includes assessing unnatural demographic shifts caused by illegal immigration and other factors, analyzing abnormal population changes within religious and social communities, and proposing timely solutions.
