Acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and Academy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman have announced their collaboration on ‘Masoom: The New Generation’, a modern retelling inspired by Kapur’s 1983 classic ‘Masoom’. This project marks a creative reunion between Kapur and Rahman, with Rahman serving as both music composer and co-producer.
The duo has previously collaborated on various projects, including Kapur’s ‘Elizabeth – The Golden Age’ and musical theatre productions like ‘Bombay Dreams’ and ‘Why? The Musical’. Directed by Kapur, ‘Masoom: The New Generation’ aims to delve into contemporary themes of identity, family, love, and migration while preserving the emotional essence of the original film.
Shekhar Kapur expressed his excitement about revisiting the world of ‘Masoom’, stating that the film’s themes deserve a modern interpretation in today’s evolving society. He emphasized the need for cinema to evolve alongside changing ideas of families, relationships, and identity.
A.R. Rahman, sharing his perspective on the collaboration, praised Shekhar Kapur as a mentor and creative force. He highlighted the timelessness of ‘Masoom’ and the significance of reimagining its emotional narrative for a new generation. The film features a talented ensemble cast, including Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Manoj Bajpayee, Nithya Menen, and Kaveri Kapur.
‘Masoom: The New Generation’ is currently in pre-production and is scheduled to begin filming later this year, aiming for a global theatrical release in 2026. The original 1983 classic, ‘Masoom’, starred Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Urmila Matondkar, and Jugal Hansraj as child actors, and boasted timeless songs like ‘Lakdi Ki Kathi’ and ‘Tujhse Naraz Nahi Zindagi’.
