The death toll from a shellfish tragedy in Karnataka’s Karwar district has reached 10 after a family drowned while collecting shellfish in a river. Three individuals were rescued, and efforts are ongoing to locate a missing family member. The identities of two individuals remain unknown, with more details awaited.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed condolences over the incident, offering Rs 5 lakh compensation to each family of the deceased. The tragic event took place near Tattehakkalu coast in Bhatkal, where members of the same family lost their lives while gathering shellfish. The Chief Minister emphasized the unfortunate nature of the incident and highlighted ongoing search operations for the missing individuals.
Among the deceased were eight identified individuals from the same family residing in Sharadahole in Padushirali village near Shirali. The incident occurred in the Tattehakkalu river, where a group of 14 people had entered to collect shellfish, leading to several individuals being trapped in deep water. Local authorities and NDRF personnel are engaged in rescue operations, with hopes for the safe return of those still missing.
