Thousands of Shia Muslim mourners participated in the 10th Muharram procession in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The procession, starting at Bota Kadal and ending in the Zadibal area, saw mourners paying tribute to Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, with chants and chest-beating. Security measures, including a multi-layer security grid, police, CRPF deployment, drone surveillance, and CCTV monitoring, were in place to ensure discipline and communal harmony.
In anticipation of the large gathering, Srinagar Police issued a detailed advisory urging peaceful and dignified observance of Muharram. The advisory emphasized maintaining communal harmony, following authorities’ directions, cooperating with traffic police for smooth movement, and respecting religious sentiments. It also cautioned against unlawful activities, provocative behavior, and damage to public property.
The observance of 10th Muharram, known as ‘Youm-e-Ashura,’ commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his companions in Karbala. This event, occurring on October 10, 680 CE, symbolizes the sacrifice for truth and resistance against tyranny. In Jammu and Kashmir, 10th Muharram is a public holiday, acknowledging its significance in Islamic history.
