The Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (UBT) strongly criticized the Mahayuti government, likening their political behavior to that of the Mahabharata’s antagonist, Duryodhana. In an editorial titled “Duryodhana’s Ego: No Need for a Leader of the Opposition!” in the party’s mouthpiece, ‘Saamana’, the Thackeray camp highlighted a perceived democratic erosion due to individual ego. They expressed concern over the ruling establishment’s reluctance to acknowledge the role of Leader of Opposition (LoP) as a constitutional necessity.
The editorial coincided with the beginning of the state’s Budget Session, which notably commenced without a designated LoP in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. Drawing a historical parallel, the editorial equated the current administration’s reluctance to grant space to the opposition with Duryodhana’s refusal to give the Pandavas even a “needlepoint of land.” This was characterized as the “pinnacle of ego.”
Questioning the sanctity of the legislature, the editorial raised concerns about the conversion of the temple of democracy into a “private firm for the rulers.” It emphasized the importance of the LoP as not just a party representative but as the “voice of the public” crucial for ensuring government accountability.
Focusing on recent parliamentary tensions, the editorial highlighted the government’s efforts to isolate the Congress party by wooing smaller allies and attempting to break the INDIA bloc from within. It accused the Mahayuti government of sidestepping accountability by marginalizing the opposition and raised transparency issues regarding high-profile incidents.
The editorial also criticized the delay in local body elections and the appointment of administrators over municipal corporations, alleging a move towards a “dictatorship.” It supported the Maha Vikas Aghadi’s (MVA) decision to boycott the tea invitation hosted by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, emphasizing the importance of opposing the government’s actions.
The editorial concluded with a cautionary note, stating that “ego is the root of destruction” and warning that running a legislature without an opposition leader could lead to “the murder of democracy.”
