Amid tensions sparked by Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Dina Patil’s controversial remarks and threats towards media personnel, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde condemned any disrespect towards journalists. Patil faced criticism for using abusive language and making threats to reporters on camera when questioned about his shift to the Shiv Sena.
During the confrontation with reporters regarding his political move and ongoing feud with the Uddhav Thackeray faction, Patil became agitated. The situation escalated as he used offensive language and directly threatened journalists in the presence of police officers.
Patil was captured on camera warning journalists, “If you come back to me again, I will have you beaten up.” He further stated, “Write whatever you want, record it, go and complain to the Commissioner. I am saying this right in front of the police.”
Following protests from journalist associations and Opposition parties, Shinde, accompanied by transport minister Pratap Sarnaik, held a press conference emphasizing zero tolerance for disrespect towards journalists. Shinde criticized the trend of politicians using aggressive language in public discourse, without naming specific individuals.
Expressing concern over the deteriorating political discourse in Maharashtra, Shinde highlighted the need to uphold democracy and media dignity. He clarified his discussion with Patil, who expressed regret for his outburst, attributing it to accumulated frustration from personal attacks by Opposition elements since 2022.
Shinde advised Patil to refrain from such behavior in the future and emphasized the importance of issuing sincere apologies if inappropriate words are spoken. As journalist associations protest against Patil’s actions, Shinde’s intervention aims to promote civility and respect in political interactions.
