Shrachi Bengal Tigers, after securing third place in the Women’s Hockey India League debut, are determined to make a bigger impact in the upcoming season starting on December 28. The team has bolstered its lineup by retaining key players like Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, Mahima Choudhary, and Jennifer Rizzo, and making strategic signings in the mini-auctions. Notably, Agustina Gorzelany became the highest-paid player at INR 42 lakh, while Monika was the top Indian player at INR 15 lakh.
Jennifer Rizzo, a prominent figure in the goalkeeping department, is set to lead alongside Aditi Maheshwari, a promising Indian goalkeeper with a successful track record. Defensively, the Argentine duo Agustina Gorzelany and Valentina Raposo, both Olympic medalists, will play crucial roles in fortifying the team’s defense. Gurjit Kaur, a seasoned Olympic medallist, brings her vast experience to the squad, supported by young talents in the backline.
In the midfield, Monika, with her wealth of experience and 229 senior caps for India, is poised to make a significant impact in her league debut. She is complemented by Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, a Commonwealth Games medalist with 252 caps. The team also welcomes Noor de Baat from the Netherlands, known for her versatility and exceptional skills across various formats.
The forward line features veterans like Vandana Katariya and Lalremsiami, who bring a wealth of experience and accolades to the team. Young talents such as Sukhveer Kaur and Purnima Yadav, with exposure from international tournaments, add depth to the squad. Notable additions from Argentina and the Netherlands, along with rising star Anjali Gautam from Madhya Pradesh, further strengthen the team’s attacking options.
Deepak Thakur, a renowned former Indian men’s hockey player and Arjuna Award recipient, will lead as the Head Coach for Shrachi Bengal Tigers in the upcoming season. The team’s first match is scheduled against JSW Soorma Hockey Club on December 29th in Ranchi.
Strengths of the team lie in a solid defensive lineup anchored by Olympic medalists, providing stability at the back. Seasoned players like Monika and Vandana Katariya offer leadership and composure, forming a strong core for the team. However, potential weaknesses may arise in establishing rapid midfield cohesion due to the mix of new recruits and young forwards depending on consistency in finishing.
