All 78 Sikh legislators, including Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwa, gathered before the Akal Takht to discuss the amended anti-sacrilege law. The legislation, known as the Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, was swiftly passed by the Assembly and received the Governor’s approval.
Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj criticized the government for amending the law without consulting the Akal Takht and other Sikh bodies. He emphasized the importance of obtaining approval from Sikh institutions before enacting laws related to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Maharaj.
The Shiromani Akali Dal leader, Bikram Majithia, condemned the government for disregarding directives from the Akal Takht while formulating the anti-sacrilege law. He stressed the need for thorough consultation with Sikh institutions and the global Sikh congregation to ensure inclusivity.
