Sikkim has achieved full literacy status under the Ullas – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, surpassing the national target set for 2027. The announcement was made at the seventh convocation ceremony of Sikkim University in Gangtok, attended by President Droupadi Murmu. Governor Om Prakash Mathur, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and Education Minister Raju Basnet were also present.
President Murmu commended the state government and the people of Sikkim for this accomplishment, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the literacy campaign. She applauded the active participation of women in educational initiatives, highlighting the collective effort that led to Sikkim becoming fully literate. Governor Mathur expressed pride in the state’s achievement and lauded the Chief Minister and his team for their success.
Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba recognized the dedication of volunteers, teachers, and grassroots workers in villages and communities that contributed to this milestone. He stressed the importance of maintaining the momentum to uphold literacy standards in the future. The coordinated efforts of Gram Panchayats, urban local bodies, and communities were instrumental in achieving full literacy, seen as a step towards empowerment and social progress in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
