The Mayor of Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) in West Bengal, Gautam Deb, has resigned from his position, leading to the dissolution of the fourth Trinamool Congress-controlled Municipal Corporation Board in the state. This follows the resignations of mayors from Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC), and Chandernagore Municipal Corporation (CMC).
Gautam Deb submitted his resignation to the SMC Commissioner, Ashwini Kumar Roy. Despite attempts by some members to persuade him to stay until the Trinamool Congress-run SMC board’s term ends in a year, Deb remained firm in his decision to step down. He had served as the Minister of North Bengal Development Department and later as the Minister for Tourism in West Bengal.
Having lost in the 2021 elections, Deb led the Trinamool Congress to victory in the 2022 Siliguri Municipal Corporation elections, subsequently becoming the Mayor. However, in 2026, he was defeated by the BJP candidate from Siliguri Assembly constituency, Shankar Ghosh.
