The Sivagiri Mutt has requested Rahul Gandhi to ensure that candidates from backward communities are fielded in winnable constituencies for the upcoming Assembly elections. This appeal was made during Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the mutt, where he paid respects at Sree Narayana Guru’s samadhi. This visit marked his second consecutive day of engagements with the Sivagiri Mutt.

Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by K. C. Venugopal and Adoor Prakash, among others, visited the mutt after attending the Guru-Gandhi Samagam centenary celebrations in Kollam. The leaders paid floral tributes at the Mahasamadhi of Sree Narayana Guru and engaged with Swami Sachchidananda, the president of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham Trust.

During the visit, the mutt formally submitted a written request for adequate representation of backward communities in the upcoming elections. Specifically, they asked for candidates from these communities to be placed in constituencies where victory chances are high. Rahul Gandhi assured that the request would be reviewed, acknowledging the importance of the mutt’s appeal in the context of the approaching elections.

Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Sivagiri holds significance as part of the Congress party’s efforts to strengthen connections with the Ezhava community through the mutt before the elections. The Ezhava community, the largest in Kerala, has seen limited representation among Congress legislators. Therefore, the mutt’s plea for increased representation for backward communities carries weight in the political landscape.
