In the vicinity of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences hospital (RIMS) in Ranchi, a ‘Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra’ is providing hope to patients burdened by high medicine costs. This government-run center sells quality generic medicines at prices significantly lower (50 to 90 per cent) than branded alternatives available in regular pharmacies. For many underprivileged and middle-class families seeking treatment at the hospital, this initiative enables them to afford prescribed drugs without financial strain.
The center stocks a variety of essential medicines for common ailments like fever, pain, and infections, along with medications for chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart problems, and more severe illnesses. Additionally, it offers surgical items like bandages at affordable rates. Users attest that these generic medicines are as effective as costly brands, providing both efficacy and peace of mind.
Lal Prasad, a recent visitor, expressed gratitude after purchasing several medicines for just Rs 78, acknowledging Prime Minister Narendra Modi for initiating this program that enhances healthcare accessibility for the general populace. Another visitor, Amar Lal Prasad, praised the center for its cost-effectiveness and excellent service, emphasizing the significant price difference compared to outside pharmacies.
Dev Oraon, another beneficiary, shared his positive experience, highlighting the affordability of medicines at the Jan Aushadhi Kendra. He noted that the same three medicines would have cost substantially more in the open market but were available for only Rs 62 at the center. Jaideep, the manager, mentioned that the Kendra stocks almost all medicines prescribed in the outpatient department, except for specialized drugs required for surgeries.
Patients undergoing long-term treatments benefit financially from purchasing medicines here, with the quality of generic drugs being highly commended. The scheme has proven to be a boon for economically disadvantaged families, with approximately 1500 impoverished patients visiting the outpatient department at RIMS hospital daily in Ranchi. The Jan Aushadhi Kendra has emerged as a significant relief source for many families, significantly reducing the financial burden by offering medicines at a fraction of the cost compared to regular pharmacies.
The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana scheme, a crucial government initiative, aims to ensure the availability of quality medicines at affordable prices for all. The center near RIMS hospital exemplifies the success of this endeavor, particularly benefiting low-income and middle-class patients by alleviating the dilemma between purchasing medicines and meeting basic needs. This initiative allows individuals to focus on recovery rather than financial concerns.
Instances like that of Dev Oraon underscore how minor, cost-effective improvements in healthcare access can significantly impact daily life in Jharkhand and beyond.
