Afghanistan head coach Richard Pybus has emphasized the need for the International Cricket Council (ICC) to establish a structured Test calendar for his team. Pybus expressed concerns that sporadic one-off matches are insufficient to sustain red-ball cricket in Afghanistan. The team, which gained Test status in 2018, is preparing for their second Test against India starting this Saturday.
Pybus commended the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for providing Afghanistan with ample cricket opportunities this year to aid in their development. He stressed the importance of a full fixture list for countries with full membership, advocating for a comprehensive schedule for all senior full members. Pybus highlighted the significance of continuous learning and adaptation, criticizing the practice of playing one-off Test matches.
The coach underscored the value of playing Test series with multiple matches in succession, emphasizing the need for concentrated learning and development. Pybus suggested that series should consist of three or five Tests to ensure a conclusive outcome and maximize the learning experience for players. He also acknowledged the challenges faced by star player Rashid Khan, expressing concerns over Khan’s back-related issues and the demanding cricketing calendar.
