The smuggling of narcotics from Myanmar into India remains a significant issue along the border, as security forces in Mizoram seized methamphetamine tablets worth approximately Rs 3 crore and arrested two drug traffickers. Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint operation by Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police led to the discovery of individuals carrying contraband items in the border region between Tlangsam and Zotlang in eastern Mizoram’s Champhai district.
The operation resulted in the seizure of 950 grams of methamphetamine tablets, a highly addictive substance with an estimated international market value of Rs 3 crore. The confiscated drugs and the apprehended individuals were handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department of Mizoram for further investigation and legal action. This incident underscores the persistent challenge posed by cross-border drug trafficking networks along the India-Myanmar frontier and highlights the efforts of security forces to combat narcotics smuggling and safeguard border communities in Mizoram.
Mizoram Governor General Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd.) recently called on the public to uphold the Mizo value of ‘Tlawmngaihna’ – emphasizing selflessness, compassion, and voluntary service – in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking. Expressing concern over the rise of narcotics, the Governor stressed the importance of collective action to combat drug-related issues and ensure a secure future for the youth. Myanmar’s Chin State has long been a key transit route for smuggling narcotics, wildlife, and contraband into India through Mizoram’s border-linked districts, which face challenges due to the unfenced and mountainous international border with Myanmar.
Security agencies have raised alarms about transnational smuggling syndicates exploiting the porous border, with drug trafficking posing a significant enforcement challenge in the region.
