Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale has revealed plans to review a security agreement signed with China. During a joint press conference in Canberra with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Wale mentioned the challenges he faced in accessing the document, stating that he only obtained a copy a day before his trip to Australia. This visit marks Wale’s first official overseas visit since assuming office in May.
Wale, when questioned about the security pact with China, explained that due to a non-disclosure clause, he couldn’t immediately share details but assured that his government would be reviewing various security agreements with different countries. The agreement in question was signed in 2022 by the former Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, causing concerns in Australia.
Acknowledging the historical ties between Solomon Islands and Australia, Wale emphasized the enduring friendship between the two nations despite past challenges. He highlighted the importance of people-to-people connections and institutional relations that have strengthened the relationship over the years. Meanwhile, Australian PM Albanese affirmed the commitment to enhancing bilateral relations, emphasizing mutual trust, respect, and open dialogue in a new comprehensive treaty.
Albanese further announced plans to advance cooperation in policing between Australia and the Solomon Islands, building on existing partnerships to address regional security challenges. The leaders agreed to progress the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force and Australian Federal Police Policing Partnership Program, demonstrating a shared dedication to regional security initiatives.
