For the first time since its reconstruction, the Somnath Temple’s spire will undergo a Kumbhabhishek ritual using water from 11 pilgrimage sites. This event is part of the ongoing ‘Somnath Amrit Parv-2026’ and coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on May 11. The ritual involves lifting a ceremonial kumbh to a height of about 90 meters using a crane and then consecrating the temple’s shikhar with water from revered locations.
The ceremony will bring together traditional temple authorities and priests for this unique high-altitude ritual. Organizers have described this Kumbhabhishek at the shikhar as the first of its kind in the temple’s modern history. Hemal Bhatt, President of the Sompura Brahmin Samaj, highlighted the significance of this ritual, noting its novelty compared to traditional practices observed in southern India.
Hemal Bhatt emphasized that while similar rituals are common in southern India, this specific form of high-altitude Kumbhabhishek at Somnath is unprecedented. The Somnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, has a rich history of destruction and reconstruction, culminating in its present form. This upcoming ceremony on May 11 is expected to mark a significant milestone in the temple’s ritual practices, with the participation of priests, temple authorities, and dignitaries.
