Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, emphasized that any oral or IV treatment for her husband should only proceed with consent from her, the family, and long-term doctors. Wangchuk, an innovator, educator, and climate activist, had been on a hunger strike for over 20 days at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar before being hospitalized due to deteriorating health. The Delhi High Court’s directives and medical advice prompted his shift to the hospital.

Police intervened at the protest site to transfer Wangchuk to the hospital amidst demonstrations by fellow activists. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) confirmed the move on social media, citing the High Court’s orders and medical recommendations. The High Court had earlier stressed the importance of Wangchuk’s health, directing regular health assessments and necessary medical care to safeguard his life.

Wangchuk initiated the hunger strike to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged NEET examination irregularities. Additionally, he planned a march from Jantar Mantar to Parliament House on July 20 to further press for Pradhan’s resignation.
