Sophie Molineux has been appointed as the captain of the Australian Women’s Team, succeeding Alyssa Healy who will retire in March, as announced by Cricket Australia. Molineux, a left-arm spinner, has been a key player in Australia’s white-ball success since her international debut in 2018, contributing to victories in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2018 and 2020.
The 28-year-old will lead the team for the first time in three T20Is against India in the upcoming Women’s International Series starting on February 15. Expressing her pride in the appointment, Molineux acknowledged the team’s strong leadership and upcoming talent, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the team’s unique identity while striving for excellence.
Meanwhile, Alyssa Healy will captain Australia for the last time in three ODIs and a Test match, with Molineux as her deputy. Ashleigh Gardner has been named vice-captain alongside Tahlia McGrath across all formats, with National Selector Shawn Flegler praising Molineux’s leadership qualities and the team’s overall strength.
Australia also revealed the squads for the upcoming matches against India, including a Governor-General’s XI to play a T20 match against the visitors. Notable selections include all-rounder Nicola Carey and left-arm quick Lucy Hamilton, with Flegler highlighting their skills and potential contributions to the team’s success.
