South Korea and the United States are set to conduct their annual joint military exercise, the Freedom Shield (FS), from March 9-19. This exercise aims to enhance their combined defense capabilities and readiness. The drills will focus on strengthening the alliance’s operational control as they prepare for the transfer of wartime command from the US to South Korea.

The upcoming exercise, which includes the “Warrior Shield” field training, will involve combined, joint, all-domain operations. Both countries view this as a crucial step in their military cooperation and in maintaining a strong defense posture. The exercise will also support the ongoing preparations for a condition-based wartime operational transition, in line with the alliance agreement.

South Korea is working towards a conditions-based transfer of wartime command from the US by 2030, within President Lee Jae Myung’s term. As part of this transition, the allies have agreed to assess Seoul’s Full Operational Capability (FOC) by the end of this year. Despite efforts to expedite the transfer, there may be a reduction in field training activities during the upcoming exercise compared to previous years.

The South Korean government’s proposal to scale down field training has faced some reservations from Washington, particularly amid efforts to improve relations with North Korea. South Korea aims to create a conducive environment for potential dialogue between the US and North Korea, especially ahead of the upcoming summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in April. North Korea has historically criticized these joint military exercises as preparations for invasion, while the allies maintain that the drills are defensive in nature.

The annual joint military exercises between South Korea and the US typically involve computer simulation-based command post exercises. In addition to the FS exercise in March, they also conduct the Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise in August, emphasizing the importance of their military readiness and cooperation.
