A 4,400-tonne South Korean destroyer has left a naval base in Busan for a rotational deployment off the Somali coast. The ROKS Wang Geon destroyer departed to join the Cheonghae unit engaged in an anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden.
This marks the ninth overseas deployment of the destroyer and the 48th vessel to join the Cheonghae unit. Around 260 troops, including crew members, a naval special warfare flotilla boarding team, and aviation unit, will be deployed for a six-month tour in the Gulf.
The Cheonghae unit’s primary tasks include escorting South Korean vessels, supporting maritime safety efforts, and responding to terror threats. It is prepared to participate in maritime security operations led by international forces if needed.
Amid speculation, the South Korean mission is gearing up for potential participation in multinational efforts to restore shipping navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. This move comes after US-led strikes against Iran led to the closure of the crucial oil shipping route in late February.
