South Korean President Lee Jae Myung highlighted the importance of reform and innovation in executing policy tasks within government ministries and agencies. He underscored the significance of the remaining period of his term in achieving policy objectives. During the initial day of policy briefings, Lee was updated by various entities including the finance ministry, National Tax Service, and Korea Customs Service.
Lee acknowledged the progress made in the past year but stressed that the upcoming three years and 11 months are crucial. He urged comprehensive preparation for long-term policy goal implementation while addressing internal governmental issues. The president particularly emphasized the necessity of pursuing reform and innovation in policy execution, focusing on the collection of overdue taxes.
Addressing the challenge of more than 100 trillion won (USD 67.1 billion) in overdue national taxes and state revenues, Lee advocated for bold actions, such as hiring additional personnel temporarily. He described the normalization of abnormal situations as a demanding task that requires decisive measures. The policy briefings, themed “An Irreplaceable Republic of Korea Felt in Everyday Life,” will involve 140 government ministries and agencies reporting to Lee over nine sessions until early August.
