South Korea saw a surge in K-pop album exports in the first half of 2026, hitting a record high of $257.48 million. This growth, up 125 percent from the previous year, was largely attributed to the success of BTS’ fifth studio album, ‘Arirang.’ The United States emerged as the top importer of K-pop albums during this period, followed by China and Japan.
The popularity of K-pop continued to shine as BTS, a globally renowned boy band, released a new album after almost four years in March. This album, along with its lead single, dominated Billboard’s main charts. Additionally, BLACKPINK’s third mini album, “Deadline,” released in February, had sold close to 2 million copies by June.
In a bid to promote Korean cultural exports, South Korea is hosting a Korean culture expo in Paris this week. The “K-Expo France 2026” event, running from Tuesday to Friday, aims to showcase Korean cultural content, food, beauty products, fashion, and tourism. This initiative is part of South Korea’s efforts to strengthen ties with France on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in collaboration with other ministries, has been organizing K-Expo events since 2022 to boost the global presence of Korean companies. These events focus on connecting cultural content with industries like agriculture, fisheries, and cosmetics. At the recent expo in Paris, major Korean companies and institutions displayed a range of consumer products, as well as cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and immersive content.
