Spain coach Luis de la Fuente expressed optimism that winger Nico Williams will be fit for the World Cup finals despite a hamstring injury suffered over the weekend. Williams sustained a moderate left hamstring injury during Athletic Club’s recent match against Valencia, forcing him off the field. De la Fuente assured that Williams, who will miss the rest of the domestic season, is expected to recover in three to four weeks without setbacks.
De la Fuente mentioned that Williams, with six goals in 30 Spain appearances, should be ready for Spain’s World Cup opener against Cape Verde on June 15. Even if Williams misses the first game, the coach believes he will be available for subsequent matches. De la Fuente plans to reveal his preliminary squad on May 22, intending to call up more players initially to prepare for the World Cup.
Expressing concern about potential injuries before the domestic season’s end on May 24, De la Fuente emphasized the importance of his players’ fitness. He hopes to avoid further injuries as any minor setback could impact the World Cup preparations. The FIFA World Cup 2026 is scheduled from June 11 to July 19 and will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
