The Spanish football federation has confirmed an additional warm-up match against Iraq before the FIFA World Cup 2026. The match will take place on June 4 at Deportivo La Coruna’s Riazor Stadium. This game will be Spain’s final preparation before heading to Mexico for another friendly against Peru in Puebla.
Spain and Iraq have previously met only once at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, where Spain secured a 1-0 victory with a goal from David Villa. Despite being one of the favorites for the upcoming World Cup, Spain’s head coach Luis de la Fuente is dealing with various injury concerns. Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal is out for the season due to a hamstring injury, while Nico Williams and Mikel Merino are also facing fitness issues.
In the World Cup 2026, Spain is placed in Group H alongside Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay. Their campaign will kick off on June 15 against Cape Verde, followed by matches against Saudi Arabia on June 21 and Uruguay on June 26. Spain, a dominant force in FIFA World Cup history, has participated in 16 tournaments and claimed the title in 2010. Their renowned possession-based style has led to notable achievements, including a fourth-place finish in 1950 and multiple quarter-final appearances.
