Speculation is rife about the potential imposition of President’s Rule in Tamil Nadu as the impasse over government formation persists. The current government’s term ends on May 10, leaving uncertainty regarding the next administration in the state.
Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has stated that no party will be invited to form the government without the support of at least 118 MLAs in the 234-member Assembly. Actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which won 108 seats, is seeking external backing to reach the majority mark.
The DMK-led alliance secured 73 seats, while the AIADMK-led front obtained 53 seats. TVK has engaged in discussions with the Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Communist Party of India (CPI), and CPI(M) to bolster its numbers.
Despite receiving support from the Congress and other parties, Vijay may need to resign from one of his constituencies, potentially falling short of the required majority. The situation remains uncertain as talks with VCK continue, while allegations of horse-trading add complexity to the political landscape.
