The sports goods manufacturing sector has been identified as a crucial element in India’s growing sports economy, according to Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. Mandaviya emphasized that this sector will play a significant role in establishing India as a global sports powerhouse. At a seminar in Vadodara, he highlighted the role of sports goods manufacturing in creating opportunities for innovation, startups, exports, and domestic production.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, present at the seminar, mentioned that Gujarat has devised a roadmap for “Viksit Gujarat” in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Viksit Bharat @2047.” Patel outlined the division of the state into six economic regions, each with specific focus sectors to ensure balanced development. He also noted the success of the Vibrant Gujarat platform as a globally recognized investment forum.
The seminar also discussed the proposal to develop Chhota Udepur as a hub for sports goods manufacturing by leveraging traditional skills and transitioning to industrial-scale production. Mandaviya stressed that the increasing participation in sports is directly contributing to the sector’s manufacturing capabilities and export potential. Efforts are being made under the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat to promote indigenous production and provide policy support for the upcoming international sporting events.
Technical sessions at the seminar included presentations by Khelo India Joint Secretary Vinil Krishna and NITI Aayog Programme Director Sanjeet Singh. Topics covered during the discussions ranged from product category identification and skill development for tribal youth to strengthening MSMEs and expanding investments in the sports goods manufacturing sector.
