Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will honor the memory of legendary West Indies all-rounder Sir Garfield Sobers by observing a minute’s silence before the start of Saturday’s Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 matches at the SSC Grounds in Colombo. Players from all participating teams will wear black armbands during the day’s fixtures as a mark of respect for Sobers, one of the greatest cricketers in history.
SLC expressed its deepest condolences for the passing of Sir Garfield Sobers, recognizing his exceptional achievements on the field and his significant connection with Sri Lankan cricket. Sobers had a special bond with Sri Lankan cricket, having served as the coach of the Sri Lanka national team in the early 1980s, including during the 1983 Cricket World Cup.
In tribute to Sobers, a minute’s silence will precede the LPL fixtures in Colombo, with players donning black armbands. Sri Lanka Cricket emphasized that this gesture was a tribute to the late Sir Garry Sobers, highlighting his lasting impact on the sport and the respect he commanded across the cricketing world.
SLC extended sympathies to Sobers’ family, underscoring the unity of the cricketing community in Sri Lanka in mourning the loss of this iconic figure. Sir Garfield Sobers, widely acclaimed as the greatest all-rounder in cricket history, not only left a remarkable legacy through his on-field performances but also through his coaching contributions to Sri Lankan cricket.
