The Sri Lanka Cricket transformation committee has engaged in positive discussions with ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khwaja regarding the governance changes in Sri Lankan Cricket. Khwaja, who recently visited Sri Lanka, met with the committee and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to understand the new structures in place. The focus remains on implementing a new constitution for a strong foundation in sports governance.
Committee member Sidath Wettimuny expressed satisfaction with the meeting outcomes, emphasizing the importance of Sri Lanka maintaining its Full Member status within the ICC. The history of government interference in Sri Lanka Cricket has led to past ICC sanctions, including suspensions and funding freezes. The current committee aims to reform governance structures before transitioning power to an elected body.
The committee’s objectives include establishing robust structures, top-notch facilities, and effective incentive models to support national teams. The goal is to empower players for consistent high-level performances and elevate Sri Lanka’s international rankings. Comprising nine members, including former captains Kumar Sangakkara, Wettimuny, and Roshan Mahanama, the committee is chaired by ex-MP Eran Wickramaratne, with diverse expertise in business, law, and politics.
