After Sri Lanka’s narrow defeat to Pakistan in the T20 World Cup Super 8 stage, head coach Sanath Jayasuriya has chosen to resign. The team missed out on advancing to the knockout rounds of the tournament, facing a third consecutive loss in the Super Eights phase against Pakistan. Jayasuriya expressed his decision to step down during a post-match press conference, citing his earlier intention to leave the coaching role.
Jayasuriya, who took over as coach after the 2024 T20 World Cup, revealed his plan to discuss his future with officials following the team’s disappointing campaign in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup. Despite his contract running until June, Jayasuriya expressed his readiness to vacate the position if a replacement is found by the Sri Lanka Cricket board.
Reflecting on Sri Lanka’s performance, Jayasuriya acknowledged the team’s missed opportunities and lack of consistency in both batting and bowling departments. He emphasized the importance of maintaining consistency across all aspects of the game to secure victories. Despite the setbacks in the T20 World Cup, Jayasuriya highlighted the progress made during his tenure, including notable wins in ODI and Test matches.
