The month-long Budget session in Maharashtra, starting on February 23, is anticipated to be contentious. The ruling Mahayuti alliance faces the challenge of maintaining political momentum following recent local body election success and a significant leadership transition. The session is crucial as it coincides with a shift in the state’s political leadership due to the untimely passing of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

Despite being numerically weaker, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi plans to confront the government on various issues during the session. These include concerns about agriculture, state finances, revenue deficits, and delays in development project payments. The Budget session, beginning on Monday, will run until March 25, with discussions set to commence after the Governor’s address on the first day.

The opposition, led by NCP-SP leader Rohit Pawar, is expected to demand a transparent investigation into the plane crash that claimed Ajit Pawar’s life. Allegations of political conspiracy surround the crash. The ruling party’s dominance in the Assembly has drawn criticism, particularly regarding the handling of legislative motions and questions, with concerns raised about the Speaker’s impartiality.

Allegations of impropriety have been leveled against the Speaker, further intensifying the political climate. The opposition aims to hold Speaker Narwekar accountable for his actions, including allegations of interference in local elections. The opposition’s strategy includes demanding answers and seeking clarity on various incidents involving the Speaker.
