Another student has tragically died by suicide at the IIT Kharagpur campus in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district, marking the second such incident within ten days. The body of a 22-year-old engineering student, identified as Soham Haldar, was discovered in the Madan Mohan Malviya Hall on Tuesday morning. Authorities suspect it to be a case of suicide.
Soham Haldar, a resident of the Shalbagan area of Barasat in the North 24 Parganas district, was pursuing an MTech in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering at IIT Kharagpur. Security guards raised concerns when his room remained closed, leading to the discovery of his body. The police were immediately notified, and the body was taken to BC Roy Hospital, where doctors confirmed his passing.
The police are currently treating the incident as a suicide case, with the body undergoing post-mortem examination. The family of the deceased has been informed of the tragic event. Meanwhile, the IIT Kharagpur authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the matter.
In a previous incident on April 18, a student named Jaibir Singh Dodia had jumped from the eighth floor of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hall at the Kharagpur IIT campus. This marks the seventh student death at IIT Kharagpur in 2025, with five of the deaths involving hanging. The string of tragedies includes students like Shoaan Malik, Aniket Walkar, Mohammad Asif Qamar, Ritam Mandal, Chandradeep Pawar, Harsh Kumar Pandey, and Bhattaram Sharan Kumar, whose demise occurred under different circumstances.
