Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai recently expressed his thoughts on the trend of remaking timeless classic songs in movies. Ghai, known for films like ‘Taal’ and ‘Karma,’ emphasized that cinema evolves with society, much like people do over time. He highlighted the impact of the digital space in providing opportunities for storytellers to share diverse narratives.
In a conversation with media, Ghai was questioned about the current practice of recreating iconic Bollywood songs and its implications for filmmakers with a legacy of delivering timeless music and films. He stressed that creative endeavors are influenced by the prevailing times and generations, citing the evolution of cinema from the era of Dadasaheb Phalke to contemporary filmmakers.
Ghai underlined the dynamic nature of cinema, likening it to a reflection of societal changes and individual growth. He noted the shift in expressions and storytelling techniques over the years, emphasizing the evolving nature of narratives in modern cinema compared to past decades. The filmmaker also highlighted the expanded storytelling possibilities brought about by the digital era.
As Whistling Woods, Ghai’s renowned film institute, celebrated its 25th anniversary, the occasion was marked by a grand convocation for over 300 aspiring filmmakers ready to embark on their professional journeys. The event, graced by actor Jackie Shroff from Ghai’s film ‘Hero,’ included an award ceremony honoring the graduating students.
