Filmmaker Subhash Ghai commemorated the 46th anniversary of his 1980 classic ‘Karz’ on June 27. Reflecting on the film’s past, Ghai shared that the cast, including the late actor Rishi Kapoor, felt disheartened when the movie initially flopped at the box office. Ghai took to social media, posting a collage celebrating the film’s enduring musical legacy and a vintage behind-the-scenes photo from the movie’s set.
The nostalgic image captures Ghai directing Rishi Kapoor and actress Tina Munim during the filming of ‘Karz.’ Ghai’s post highlighted the film’s transformation from a perceived flop to a celebrated musical over the years. ‘Karz,’ released on June 27, 1980, was both directed and produced by Subhash Ghai under the Mukta Arts banner.
Starring Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim, Simi Garewal, and others, ‘Karz’ is a reincarnation thriller centered around Monty, a singer who uncovers memories from a previous life, realizing he is the reincarnation of a murdered wealthy man seeking justice. Apart from its storyline, the film’s soundtrack, composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal with lyrics by Anand Bakshi, remains iconic with songs like ‘Om Shanti Om’ and ‘Ek Hasina Thi.’
Rishi Kapoor, who portrayed Monty, passed away in 2020 at the age of 67 after battling leukemia. ‘Karz’ has inspired various adaptations, with reports suggesting that Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ drew inspiration from its themes.
