Successive storms in Portugal have resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals since late January. The most recent victim, a 64-year-old man, tragically lost his life when his car was swept away by floodwaters near the Amoreira Dam in Pias, southern Portugal. Storm Kristin has been particularly devastating, with Storm Leonardo also impacting the country.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro has unveiled a 2.5 billion euros support package for families and businesses affected by the storms. This aid includes reconstruction support, income assistance for families, and relief for businesses through tax and credit moratoriums. Direct grants of up to 10,000 euros will be available for uninsured primary homes and agricultural activities.
The government has extended the national state of calamity until February 8 to address the aftermath of the storms. Families experiencing financial hardship can receive up to 537 euros per person, with businesses in affected areas benefiting from Social Security contribution exemptions and temporary layoff schemes. Additionally, credit lines totaling 1.5 billion euros will be launched to support business recovery efforts.
