Sunetra Pawar has been officially elected as the National President of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) during the party’s national executive meeting in Mumbai. Praful Patel, the Party Working President, proposed Pawar’s name, leading to her unanimous election. Sunil Tatkare, the Maharashtra unit President, seconded her nomination and praised her appointment.
Members of the national executive showed their support for Sunetra Pawar’s leadership by raising their hands. The transition follows the tragic passing of Ajit Pawar, her late husband, who previously held the position until his unfortunate demise in a plane crash. Sunetra Pawar assumed office on February 26 after receiving the backing of party MLAs and senior leaders.
Sunetra Pawar made history by becoming the first woman Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra on January 31. Prior to this, she was chosen as the leader of the NCP Legislative Party due to a sudden leadership vacuum. Besides her party duties, Pawar also serves in the Maharashtra Cabinet under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, overseeing significant portfolios such as State Excise and Sports.
This elevation in Sunetra Pawar’s political career signifies a remarkable transformation from a Rajya Sabha MP to a prominent figure in state and party leadership within a short period. Her rise to the national presidency of the NCP represents a shift from a more reserved role to a central position in active political leadership.
