The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing on Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar’s petition against A.R. Rahman to February 20. Dagar alleges that Rahman’s song “Veera Raja Veera” from the movie “Ponniyin Selvan II” is inspired by his family’s traditional composition “Shiva Stuti.”
During the proceedings, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi acknowledged the significant contribution of the Dagarvani tradition to Indian classical music. The Bench suggested considering some form of acknowledgment instead of delving into legal intricacies.
The court emphasized the need for recognition and respect for the traditional worshippers of classical music, highlighting that they are not in competition but seek acknowledgment for their contributions.
