The Supreme Court’s decision to deny bail to student activists Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid in a case related to the 2020 Delhi riots has sparked contrasting political reactions. BJP welcomed the verdict, emphasizing the careful examination of evidence by the apex court before reaching its decision.

Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra viewed the judgment as validation that the 2020 Delhi riots were premeditated, not spontaneous. He highlighted the deliberate planning and preparation behind the violence. Another Delhi Minister, Ashish Sood, condemned Sharjeel Imam for conspiring against the country and called for accountability from political parties associated with him.

Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa supported the verdict, stressing the necessity of strict action against rioters. In contrast, Congress leaders expressed disappointment, with Udit Raj advocating for bail due to the extended period of incarceration. He criticized the incomplete police investigation and alleged communal bias in the government’s actions.

Congress leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui maintained a cautious stance, citing a lack of detailed case knowledge. Congress Uttar Pradesh president Ajay Rai refrained from direct comments on the verdict, respecting the judiciary’s decision-making process. The Supreme Court denied bail to Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, citing their alleged involvement in a criminal conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots.
