In a move to promote regional languages, the Supreme Court has instructed the Rajasthan government to develop a policy mandating the teaching of Rajasthani language in all schools across the state. This directive includes both government and private educational institutions. The court emphasized the historical and cultural significance of Rajasthani and its recognition in various universities.
The bench, comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta, directed the state government to ensure the inclusion of Rajasthani language education at primary, secondary, and higher education levels. The apex court has requested a compliance report from the state government by September 30. The petitioners highlighted the extensive usage and rich literary heritage of Rajasthani during the court proceedings.
Advocating for the inclusion of Rajasthani in the educational system, the petitioners referenced a 2003 resolution by the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly recommending its addition to the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. The state government, represented by Additional Advocate General Shiv Mangal Sharma, assured the court of considering the matter within the purview of government policy. Despite Rajasthani being spoken by a significant population, it has not been integrated into the official curriculum framework.
