The Supreme Court has sent a notice to Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor following an application by Priya Kapur requesting certified copies of records related to the 2016 divorce proceedings with industrialist Sunjay Kapur. Karisma Kapoor has been directed to respond within two weeks to Priya Kapur’s request during an in-chamber proceeding presided over by Justice A.S. Chandurkar. Priya Kapur is seeking access to all documents linked to the divorce case, including the divorce petition, pleadings, court orders, and the 2016 settlement between Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur.
Priya Kapur argues that obtaining the complete divorce records, particularly the settlement terms on financial arrangements and custody, is crucial for resolving an estate dispute pending in the Delhi High Court. The divorce between Sunjay Kapur and Karisma Kapoor was finalized through a settlement that addressed custody and financial responsibilities. The issues surrounding financial arrangements for the children, education expenses, and post-divorce obligations have become recurring matters in the estate litigation, necessitating a detailed record of the divorce settlement.
The application is part of a wider family conflict over Sunjay Kapur’s personal estate, where his children from his marriage with Karisma Kapoor are seeking a portion, alleging manipulation of the will favoring his widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur. Sunjay Kapur, who married Karisma Kapoor in 2003 and divorced her in 2016, passed away at 53 due to a heart attack while playing polo in the UK, leaving behind an estate valued at around Rs 30,000 crore.
