The Supreme Court has requested a status report from the CBI regarding the progress of investigations into sexual violence cases linked to sectarian conflicts in Manipur. The Court hinted at the possibility of assigning the day-to-day monitoring of trials to the respective High Courts in Manipur and Gauhati. Following violent incidents in Manipur in 2023, the Supreme Court had transferred 11 sexual violence cases to the CBI for investigation.
The trials are currently ongoing in Assam, with provisions for victims and witnesses to testify via video conferencing from Manipur. During the hearing, concerns were raised about the handling of cases, including instances where victims were not informed about important developments. The Solicitor General emphasized the importance of upholding victims’ rights and urged the CBI to address the issues raised.
The Court stressed the need for a conducive environment for victims and witnesses to provide statements freely and without fear. It directed the CBI to submit a status report at the next hearing and discussed the coordination between the Manipur and Gauhati High Courts. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on February 26, with ongoing efforts to address humanitarian concerns and oversee rehabilitation measures.
