The Supreme Court is scheduled to review a petition on Monday filed by Dr. Gitanjali J. Angmo, the wife of Ladakh-based activist Sonam Wangchuk, challenging his ongoing detention under the National Security Act. Dr. Angmo has termed her husband’s detention as “illegal” and a violation of his fundamental rights.
A Bench consisting of Justices Aravind Kumar and Prasanna B. Varale will address the habeas corpus plea filed by Dr. Angmo. The court had previously urged the government to reconsider Wangchuk’s continued preventive detention.
Wangchuk has been in custody since September 26, 2025, and medical reports presented to the court have indicated concerns about his health. The government has been asked to reconsider the necessity of his detention.
Additional Solicitor General K.M. Nataraj defended Wangchuk’s detention, stating that it was preventive in nature and necessary to maintain public order and state security. Nataraj assured the court that he would consult with the authorities regarding the matter.
