The Surat City Police conducted a crackdown named “Operation Rambo” and apprehended 73 individuals, including repeat offenders involved in serious crimes like murder, robbery, and narcotics offenses. This operation was initiated by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the city police to address the rising use of deadly weapons in criminal activities across Surat. The aim was to enforce the weapon prohibition notification strictly and combat anti-social elements creating fear by carrying illegal weapons.
Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot’s attention was drawn to the prevalence of swords, knives, daggers, and “Rampuri” knives in criminal incidents, prompting the launch of this special drive. The police organized Operation Rambo to uphold law and order, control the possession of illegal weapons, and tackle anti-social activities that disrupt public peace. Various teams were formed to conduct combing operations in areas prone to crime based on data analysis of recent serious offenses.
During the operation, the police teams carried out surprise checks in identified crime-prone areas within the city. They apprehended 72 individuals found in possession of deadly weapons such as knives, daggers, swords, and “Rambo” knives. Cases were registered against these individuals for violating the weapon prohibition notification issued by the police commissioner. Additionally, one individual who had been externed was also detained for violating the externment order.
Several of the apprehended individuals had prior involvement in serious offenses including murder, double murder, assault, robbery, and narcotics cases. The police registered a total of 72 cases under Section 135 of the Gujarat Police Act during the operation. The checking operations were focused on public places and sensitive areas to deter anti-social elements and enhance residents’ safety and trust in law enforcement.
The Surat City Police emphasized their commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety. They reiterated a zero-tolerance policy towards activities that disturb public peace and stated that such special drives and combing operations will be conducted regularly in the future.
