Even a year after the Air India Flight 171 bound for London Gatwick crashed into a medical hostel complex in Ahmedabad’s Meghaninagar area, survivors are still haunted by the tragedy. The crash, which occurred shortly after take-off, claimed 260 lives, including 19 on the ground. Medical student Bhagirath Chawda, who narrowly escaped death, described the scene as “tragic and terrifying.”
Chawda recounted the moment of the crash, stating that he had just finished eating when an explosion shook the area. Rushing to the site, they discovered the plane split in two, with parts crashing into buildings. Despite the chaos, Chawda and others bravely attempted to rescue those trapped, with some sustaining injuries and four losing their lives.
Survivors like Chawda still feel fear when passing through the crash site, with every passing aircraft serving as a stark reminder of the tragic event. Families of the victims gathered at the site to offer prayers, perform rituals, and pay tribute to their lost loved ones. Gunjan Chaudhary, who lost his pregnant wife in the crash, emotionally recalled her last moments before boarding the ill-fated flight.
Meanwhile, families of the victims are seeking closure through the release of the final probe report by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The government has assured that a thorough investigation is ongoing, with the final report to be made public after completion of all necessary investigative procedures. Pratap Singh, a victim’s brother, appealed for financial assistance to pursue further studies due to their family’s financial struggles.
