Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, alleged that an officer-in-charge of a police station in East Midnapore district made a WhatsApp call to a key BJP leader, urging him to join the Trinamool Congress. Adhikari emphasized that such actions by a police officer during the implementation of the model code of conduct are inappropriate.
Adhikari visited the Mahishadal Police Station to address the issue directly with the officer-in-charge but found the official absent. He then conveyed his concerns to the duty-in-charge, warning against any repetition of similar incidents involving BJP leaders being encouraged to switch parties. Adhikari stated that if such occurrences persist, they will escalate the matter to the Election Commission of India.
Furthermore, Adhikari highlighted another incident where the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Tamluk allegedly influenced local BJP leaders to run as independent candidates. He cautioned all police personnel, including civic volunteers, against engaging in partisan activities while the model code of conduct is in effect, emphasizing their duty to the state rather than any political entity.
