The Leader of the House in the West Bengal Assembly, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, surprised many by announcing Rathindra Bose as the BJP’s nominee for the post of Speaker. Initially, it was expected that Tapas Roy, the seniormost party MLA, would be named, but Bose, a first-time legislator, was chosen instead. Bose, a BJP MLA from Cooch Behar Dakshin, is set to be elected unanimously if no opposition party fields a candidate.
Bose, who won from Cooch Behar (Dakshin) Assembly constituency, defeated the Trinamool Congress candidate by a significant margin. Expressing his commitment, Bose stated that he would fulfill his duties diligently as a loyal party member. He emphasized the importance of democracy and the opposition’s role in the Assembly.
As the BJP’s state vice-president in West Bengal, Bose has been actively involved in the party’s organizational work in North Bengal. Despite his lack of parliamentary experience, he is recognized for his oratory skills and has a long-standing association with the BJP and the RSS.
