Suvendu Adhikari assumed office as the Chief Minister of West Bengal in the first BJP-led state government, accompanied by four other members of the state Council of Ministers under his leadership. The newly sworn-in ministers include Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Nisith Pramanik, Ashok Kirtania, and Khudiram Tudu. Ghosh was the second to take the oath, followed by Paul, Kritania, Tudu, and Pramanik.
At present, the specific portfolios of these ministers have not been disclosed. Kirtania represents the Matua community, while Tudu is the representative of the tribal community, both of which played a significant role in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections. The diverse backgrounds of the ministers, ranging from OBC, Kayastha, Rajbanshi, to Brahmin, signify the BJP’s inclusive approach towards governance in the state.
The selection of ministers from varied caste backgrounds is seen as a strategic move by the BJP to promote inclusivity and equality in the new government. Adhikari’s appointment aligns with the criteria outlined by Union Home Minister Amit Shah for a Chief Minister who is a Bengali and has an academic background in Bengali medium. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress, now the principal Opposition party, is yet to announce the Leader of the Opposition in the House.
